Banaras, A Mystic Love Story

Banaras is not a destination its a journey of our lives. If you go to watch this movie for a ready-made solution or only to "kill" two hours, you may get disappointed. Banaras is aimed to create a thirst for something one is generally uncomfortable to explore.

I will go and watch the movie. I'm a real bollywood fan living in the UK.

I'm also a fan of Urmila!

What I haven`t understood?
- Banaras - If the intention was to make a movie which can provoke people to think, why did you put commercial element like songs and dance. Now it is in middle, not fit for commercial consumption nor right for film festivals. Look at Deepa Mehta Water, its running successfully across world...
- If the intention was not commerical, why did you choose commercial actors, rather than actors who excel in realism acting. It could have provided more depth to the movie, isn't it? Urmila as mata doesn't sound right.
- If people has not seen movie (source:www.boxofficeindia.com), why would someone buy a novel? Doesn't it make sense to introduce novel simultaneously or before the movie to generate interest.
- Making movie is a dirty business. Why a person of your caliber and repute go into this line when you have a technology company to run?

dear anonymous im taking the liberty of answering some of ur question .this is my understanding of y this movie was made the way it was. it was made for me. everybody does not like documentaries ,so it was made in a commercial format to have more mass appeal. a friend of mine described it as "when medicine is given to children its given with sweet" ..i mean who likes preachy sermons that people in safron robes give..at least i dont...so this is an attempt to reach more people because outside its packaged like a love story!
we are in a sandwitch here! some people say its too comercial and so maybe it hurts their sentimentality. too some its too arty so even they dont get it.
so ill tell you this movie is made for me and people like me.
simplest is to say "its made for people who get it".
for the rest ....they can go on watching latka jhatka masala movies and others can go and attend lectures or watch aastha channel
for me ill just watch this movie.

Meeta...looks like there are not too many people like you.... Looks like you are the rare breed who actually "got it" - whatever that means to you.

Who said documentaries dont work. Farenhite 9/11 was a documentary that worked better than lot of commerical stuff. There is a whole market for documentary and small films.

By the way the question were directed to respected L.C Singh and not to you...thus did not appreciate you taking liberty answering the questions and diluting their meaning as if I am criticising the movie and the writer. These are geniune questions directed to the one of the most reputed persons in IT business.

I am amazed how people feel insulted when the movie says " truth is simple". Are we so stupid that we judge content by the complexity of words?

When s seed is said to be a connection between God and the world and being taught to a child, why is an "inellectual" feeling insulted?

Does the simple language in any way reduces the meaning of the truth?

Lets not try and sit over a mountain and claim to understand only Bertrand Russel. This is what happened when Tulsidar wrote Ramayana in local Awadhi language. The Sanskrit scholars thought it to be below their dignity even to comment upon it..

Centuries later who is remembered?
Tusidas or those utter fearful Pundits?

Dear Anonymous,

1) in your own spiritual quest... i suppose u are yet to cross the bridge where you realise/ understand that "Everybody" has a right over how they express / their "thoughts"/creativity/ knowledge ....
2) have u lost something? did it harm you?
it seems to have hit ur rational mind...go on with your own questioning.... you will know your the answer... as it lies within you..

sorry anonymous , your point taken.i guess we tend to get defensive and its our fault. cause everybody has a right to think the way they do, i have no right to impose my view on others.
and you are right : its good to ask questions and not supress them and blindly believe!

The screenplay is really good and perceptible by common mind. Urmila has given a wonderful performance and fits the character, and so is the young girl (urmila as kid) the selection is good and she blends well. However, I am disappointed with the choice of the hero except that he has attractive masculine characters (heroic) he does seem to have any spritual characters, especially his eyes seem tamasic and gone inwards, so is the case with Nasser.shah, (for a character as strong as Baba, I guess it is more important to select a person with good features) but an experienced actor like him could patch that up with his acting though. This doesnt seem to be a first timers movie too and makes people sit till the last, that is remarkable for a beginner.

Dear Anonymous.

I believe in experimentation. I never have confined myself to fixed ways even in IT.That too yo would know if you know me.

With Banaras I planned to create in a new genre of cinema.

I am currently travelling to US and have really very little time but I will discuss your question in detail when I am back in the 2nd wk of June.

Thanks for rasing the question. I really appreciate..

The film gives a strong indication about existence of a caste based differenciation in Banaras Hindu Univ.

In my limited experience and four year stay at IT-BHU, I never felt any under currents of caste at BHU or Varanasi.

To that extent, I feel it was incorrect to project BHU in manner where faculty selection is dominated along caste lines.

Dear Yogish,

To say that there is no undercurrent of Caste-consideration in our society ( and BHU is certainly a part of it) would not be entirely right.

On the other hand, BHU is shown in good light that afterall Soham is appointed.
